18th Sunday in Ordinary Time…
Jesus warns against greed, a theme prominent in Luke’s gospel.
He tells the parable of a man so prosperous that he
builds new barns to house his abundant grain, although he is
unaware that he will soon lose his life.
Luke’s Jesus is frustrated with the greedy designs of the
human heart. From
the book of Ecclesiastes we hear an ancient echo of Jesus’
disparaging attitude toward materialism.
All things are vanity, says Qoheleth.
And for our Second Reading today, we conclude our brief
series of readings from Colossians with a beautiful appeal to
the spiritual life.
The baptized, who were raised with Christ, should seek the
things that are above.
Party Plans…
Two weeks from today (Sunday, August 15) we will celebrate our
Cathedral’s anniversary with a nice party and luncheon right
after the 12 noon Mass.
All are invited. On
Monday, August 16, we will celebrate the Anniversary of the
Dedication of the Cathedral with a festive Mass at 12 noon.
